Hardly Strictly Bluegrass – Day 2

7 10 2008

Overheard from a couple of college aged guys standing behind me while Bill Kirchen, Elvis Costello and Emmylou Harris performed Love Hurts:

“Who is this?”

“I don’t know, but isn’t this an Air Supply song?”

I didn’t turn around and gape, but I did wonder why they were braving the enormous crowd for a performance they neither recognized nor understood. In the end, I guess it doesn’t matter. There must have been about 50,000 people there who were totally blown away by it and some few who were too drunk or otherwise unaware to care, but we all had a great time together in Golden Gate Park.

A heartfelt thanks to Warren Hellman for giving the city of San Francisco a gorgeous fall weekend of music. Bringing the best musicians from all over the world to Golden Gate Park and making it free to everyone is an incredibly generous act. There were people from all over the U.S. (I met a guy at the airport in Houston who was on his way to the festival.) and of all ages who spent the weekend together, enjoying the music. Thanks, Warren!
